How to install XAMPP on Ubuntu and run WordPress Offline

What is XAMPP?

XAMPP is a free and open source Apache distribution containing MariaDB, PHP, and Perl developed by Apache Friends. It stands for Cross-Platform (X), Apache (A), MariaDB (M), PHP (P) and Perl (P). It is a simple, lightweight Apache distribution that developers  can use to create a local web server for testing and deployment purposes.

In this tutorial we will show you how to setup XAMPP server on your Ubuntu Linux Machine and also run WordPress on it.

Installing XAMPP on Ubuntu

  • Download the latest version of XAMPP from here. If you are using a 32bit OS make sure you download the 32bit version and if you are using 64bit OS make sure you download the 64bit version.
  • Now browse into the folder where you downloaded the file, right click on empty space and click “Open in terminal”
  • Now we need to make the downloaded file executable. To do that type in or copy paste the below line of code. Make sure you replace “xampp-linux-x64-7.0.8-0-installer.run” with the name of your downloaded file.
sudo chmod +x xampp-linux-x64-7.0.8-0-installer.run
  • Now to run the installer, type in or copy paste the following line of code. Again make sure you replace
“xampp-linux-x64-7.0.8-0-installer.run” with the name of your downloaded file.
sudo ./xampp-linux-x64-7.0.8-0-installer.run
  • Now the installation window will popup. Follow the instruction on the screen to complete the installation.

Running XAMPP

Open Terminal and type in the following commands

cd /opt/lampp

then

sudo ./manager-linux.run

or

 sudo ./manager-linux-x64.run
